As a LMT doing prenatal massage, I have clients who are very early in their pregnancy, not showing / bump not there yet who want to lay in prone and get their back and low back worked on. Would you advise the same ‘no prone” if I am working on the low back muscles? There is no pressure put on the pelvis, but on low back.
But I just want to make sure..
And working on the glutes could definitely put pressure on the pelvis.. so that would be a no?
Elodie, Prone massage early on in pregnancy should be fine. Pay attention to where the fundus of the uterus is and at around 16 wks it starts to pop out of the pelvis. Watch your pressures and the forces you are placing on the uterus. The concern here is for incompetent cervix. SO if it is a first time pregnancy you don’t know if someone has it, they don’t know either. So keep your pressures lighter around the uterus for the 12-30 week timeframe. Usually an incompetent cervix reveals itself in the 20-25 wk range. Does this make sense? Thanks for asking.
