8 Risk Factors for Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury

Do you talk with your pregnant clients about the risks of anal sphincter injuries? Do you know how to treat the anal sphincter to work with these types of injuries?

In today’s episode Lynn shares the risk factors for Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury (OASI) that she learned from physiotherapist, Taryn Hallam, as well as gives you tips on how to treat the external anal sphincter (EAS).

There are 8 risk factors for OASI, which occurs when there is a tear into the anal sphincter muscle and mucosa. These 8 risk factors are: 

  1. Perineum Length (going into labor)
  2. Racial Background
  3. Fetal Size
  4. Family History
  5. Epidural Analgesia
  6. Forceps Delivery
  7. Stage 2 Duration
  8. Episiotomy Type
